Fiberglass and organic shingles
Finding the best asphalt shingles requires that you have some basic understanding of how shingles are constructed and where to find the most reliable supplier for your shingles. Modern shingles come in two classifications: fiberglass and organic.
Fiberglass shingles begin with a base layer of a woven fiberglass that it is covered with a heavy asphalt coating and topped with tiny ceramic granules. The granules provide uniform color and protection from harmful ultra-violet rays. Fiberglass is also a benefit because of its exceptional fire resistant properties. Typically, fiberglass shingles also carry a longer warranty. Fiberglass shingles are easily the product of choice for most contractors today.
Organic mat-based shingles are made from layers of felt paper. Most varieties today are made from recycled paper. The paper is coated with asphalt to make the shingles waterproof, and the shingle is then coated with ceramic granules, just like the fiberglass shingles. Organic shingles require quite a bit more asphalt in their construction; hence, they are thicker, heavier, and more expensive than fiberglass shingles. Do not be misled by the “organic” moniker; the additional asphalt content makes organic shingles less environmentally friendly. Organic shingles have good wind resistance, high tear strength, and can be installed in colder temperatures.
Architectural shingles
Architectural shingles are designed to give a contoured and multi-dimensional look to your roof. They contain an extra layer and thickness on the end to create this effect. It is universally agreed that the architectural shingle creates a better looking roof that is somewhat durable, but architectural shingles should not be installed on roofs with a low slope because they are more vulnerable to wind driven rain and high winds.
Three-tab shingles
Three-tab shingles are described as such because each shingle has cutouts that make them appear as single tabs when the shingles are installed. Unlike architectural shingles, three tab shingles are the same thickness throughout, which provides a uniform look for the roof. Three-tab shingles have been around a long time and are still the most economical and most popular shingle today.
