Roofing Information
Architectural roofing shingles are high-quality asphalt roofing products with distinctive, often dramatic appearances. They are also known as laminated or dimensional roof shingle and are among the highest quality roofing products made. These roofing shingles provide a three-dimensional appearance. Some of the most attractive architectural roofing shingles simulate cedar wood shakes and slate.
Three Tab Asphalt Roofing Shingles have been the economical choice for homeowners for many years. These roofing shingles meet general roofing needs, fire resistance standards and come with a standard warranty of 20 to 50 years. Three-tab asphalt shingles are offered in a variety of colors to satisfy practically any style preference. They are also economical when it comes to repairing asphalt shingles or an overall re-roofing job.
Specialty asphalt shingles mimic an “old world” style of shingles- such as natural shake, or slate. They have a different appearance from Strip Roof Shingles and Dimensional Roof Shingles. These roofing shingles have enhanced performance such as impact resistance and solar reflectivity that can extend the life of the roof and lower energy costs. Specialty roof shingles make up less than 5% of the total shingle market for one primary reason – cost. Specialty roofing shingles, in general cost more than a common dimensional roof shingle but there is a payoff. The average specialty roofing shingle carries a 50 year to LIFETIME warranty on the product. For the most part, these roof shingles install just like dimensional asphalt roofing shingles. While there is a variety of designs available in specialty roofing shingles many specialty asphalt roofing shingles try to mimic nature. Most either copy the design of contemporary slate or wood shakes, there are however some unique designs by certain roof shingle manufacturers.
Metal roofs are durable and beautiful and a great investment. The beauty, durability, and ease of maintenance are quite appealing. Metal roofs can best be catagorized into two types, those attached with exposed fasteners and those attached with hidden fasteners.
The standing seam metal roof is the most durable and maintenance-free metal roof in the world. It is usually constructed of a heavy-duty steel panel which is seamed together. There are no exposed fasteners with this system. Standing seam metal roofs are among the most expensive metal roofs in the market. They come is a wide variety of beautiful colors and a few different profiles. Once installed, they will last virtually a lifetime!
Metal roofs with exposed fasteners, often called screw-down roofs, are very popular and very durable. Snap lock metal roofing, often referred to as a standing seam metal roof, uses a hidden fastener system. The hidden screw method not only provides better cosmetics but secures your roof in a more stable manner resisting those elements that cause leaking from screw holes “growing” over time, the “wobble” affect.
Metal roofs are a premium product and cost somewhat more than a 20 year warranty asphalt/fiberglass shingle roof; however a metal roof can cost substantially less than many of the high-end architectural shingles now being sold. Additionally, metal roofs have many advantages and benefits over asphalt/fiberglass shingle roofs.
Metal roofs are very tough and highly resistant to hail damage… much more so than asphalt/fiberglass roofing shingles. Many metal roofing products have the highest impact resistance and hail rating granted by the insurance commissions in the hail belt regions of the U.S.
It’s time to call a professional roofing company to inspect your roof and let you know the extent of the damage. Did you know that your home owner’s insurance will usually pay for the repair or replacement of your roof due to storm damage? There are some exceptions, but it’s good to know that after getting the estimate for repair, you need to call your insurance adjustor and make an appointment.
Damage to Your Roof
Hail can loosen and fracture the granules surface material of the roofing shingles. You may not see immediate damage, but it will cause further damage to your roof at an accelerated rate, if you don’t have the repair done as soon as possible. You may see granules, from your roof shingles in the gutters or areas under the eaves. Most shingles only have a few pounds of color granules per square foot of coverage. It’s doesn’t take too many loose granules to cause significant damage to your roof.
Hail can cause dimples on the roof shingles, and dents in the roof flashing, ridges, vent stacks and lead boots. If you see anything unusual about your roof, after a hail storm – call your roofing experts, here at Triad Installations, and we’ll come out and have a look at it.
Here is some helpful information to give you an idea of what your insurance agent needs to file a claim.
Make sure you record the date of the storm
If you can remember the exact date of the strong winds or hail storm, write it down. You will need this date to file a claim. Take a photo of your home and photos of the storm. If you don’t remember the day, do an internet search for the storm, “Greensboro hail storm May 2011” and the internet search will provide the dates and some photos you an use for your insurance claim.
