Repair or replace my asphalt shingle roof?
I love to shop. I love the process of buying things, but when it is time to replace my asphalt shingles, I don’t find it fun or exciting. However, I have learned that taking this decision lightly can cost me more money than I want to talk about. I do not think I am alone, I have never heard of anyone replacing their roof shingles because they think it would be nice for a change in the look of their home. People do not replace their roof until it is leaking or they are trying to sell their home and they realize that no one will buy it until the roof is replaced.
One of the most important things to realize is that you should take time to find out what is the best product to replace your shingles. I had a few replacement shingles in the garage and I set out to get another roof of the exact same type. What I learned was that technology has produced much better shingles that can save me money in the long run. For example, I found out that some of the newer shingles are high wind resistant, and there are shingles that are reflective, to keep the heat out of your attic. There are even shingles that come with a lifetime warranty. The average lifetime of a roof is between 18 to 30 years, so by the time you replace your roof, there are going to be some significant advances in technology.
Asphalt roofing shingle styles
As I mentioned before, I assumed that all shingles were of the same type, but there are many styles for different purposes. There are two tab and three tab shingles that are the same material, but designed to give your roof a different look with the same protection. Staggered cut shingles give your roof a distinctive dimensional look. Multilayer shingles are made of two layers and are designed to give your roof a three dimensional look. There are asphalt shingles that are available in wood tone colors, designed to look like wooden shakes, and also asphalt shakes that give the appearance of slate. Add to all this, the myriad of colors that are available. Color of your tiles should go beyond what appeals to you. If you do not opt for the reflective shingles, choosing the color of your shingles will have a direct effect on the energy efficiency of your home. For example, in the north or in colder climates you may opt for a dark colored roof that will absorb the heat from sunlight in the winter. In the south, or in the warmer regions of the country, you will opt for lighter colors that will absorb less heat in the summer.
